Levee fails, 100 homes flood in Arkansas town

About 100 homes are flooded in Humnoke, prompting evacuations in the Lonoke County town.

The recent rainfall caused a levee to fail, county officials said Thursday.

The town, which has a population of less than 300, has between 16 inches and 2 feet of standing water in places, according to Doug Erwin, the Lonoke County county judge.

The levee surrounded the town, which has a lower elevation than the communities around it, Erwin said, so water from Cabot and Jacksonville rushed in when the levee broke Monday night. He said officials hope to repair it in preparation for more rainfall that is forecast for this weekend.

The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management and the Red Cross are evacuating people and offering assistance, Erwin said.

"We're doing all we can do right now," Erwin said.
