LOWELL -- Two people are dead after a truck crossed oncoming traffic, hit a tree and caught fire this morning, Police say.

Lt. Paul Pillaro, public information officer with Lowell Police, said witnesses saw the truck driving erratically after it crossed traffic before running into a tree and bursting into flames. The passenger was removed from the truck but died on the way to or at Washington Regional Medical Center, Pillaro said. The driver was not able to be taken from the truck.

The accident happened near North Bloomington Street and School Avenue, Pillaro said.

The identities of the deceased have not been released. No other information was available.
