BENTONVILLE -- Dale King of Garfield is eyeing a return to the Benton County Quorum Court.

King is one of two candidates to file for the Republican Party nomination for the District 1 seat on the Quorum Court. Mike McKenzie of Rogers, the incumbent, is running for reelection. The men will face each other in the May 22 party primary election. The winner of the primary vote faces no opposition in the November general election.

King, 78, describes himself as "semi-retired" from a range of jobs including dealing in heavy equipment and working as equipment superintendent for McClinton-Anchor Construction Company. He served one term as District 1 justice of the peace from 2013 to 2014. He ran unsuccessfully for county judge in 2014. He said he still has a desire to work in county government.

"I've got a few more years left in my life and I'd like to finish a few things," he said. "I know how to get things done."

King said his main interest is working with the county Road Department, planning and improving the county's transportation network.

"The biggest problem we have is the to-and-from, getting from one side of the county to the other," he said. "I think Sheriff Shawn Holloway is doing a great thing putting substations out in the county because it's impossible to get across the county quickly. We need to improve the main arteries so people can travel and travel in safety."

King said he supports the county's proposed new courts building. He said if the county hopes to get voter approval of the $30 million project county officials need to do more to communicate with voters.

"I think the JPs have failed a little bit to communicate with the people," he said.

Justices of the peace are paid on a per meeting basis -- $230.51 for Quorum Court and Committee of the Whole meetings and $144.08 for other committees they are members of -- and serve two-year terms.
