BENTONVILLE -- Roderick Grieve, the incumbent Republican, is running for a second term as Benton County Assessor.

Grieve will face Democratic party candidate Rey Hernandez in the Nov. 6 general election. The salary for the County Assessor is $94,656.90 and the term of office will be four years beginning in 2019.

Grieve, 62, of Bentonville, said he wants to continue working on ways to increase the efficiency of the Assessor's Office.

"What I've tried to do is increase the efficiency of the office," he said. "I'm coming from outside government. I've always been self-employed, owned my own business. government is typically not as efficient as the private sector."

Grieve said he recognizes the difference between government and business and the limitations he faces as an elected official.

"I'm not foolish enough to think we can operate in the same was a private business can," he said. "But we can certainly tweak it a little bit."

Grieve has lived and worked in Benton County and Northwest Arkansas since 1987 as a certified real property appraiser, a licensed real estate broker and Benton County Assessor since taking office in 2017.

Grieve said he wants to continue working to bring the latest technology to the work of the Assessor's Office.

"We're always working to make out personal property assessment and real estate assessment as accurate as possible and as easily accessible to the public as possible," he said. The same applies to our GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping. I've been told our GIS mapping is cutting edge for Arkansas. Most of the counties in Arkansas use the state GIS system. We don't."

Grieve said he thinks continuity in office is important for the County Assessor. He said the county is in the second year of a five-year reappraisal cycle at the end of which all the real property in the county will go through the reappraisal process.
