LITTLE RED RIVER (GREERS FERRY TAILWATER) Greers Ferry Lake is at 468.4 feet msl., or 6 feet above normal. The Army Corps of Engineers will run the equivalent of 3,000 dsf per day the rest of this week. This amounts to two units of generation for 12 hours or one unit running for 24 hours. As of Tuesday, this worked out to be 16 hours of generation alternating between two units and one unit. That translates to high water on the river. Tuesday night's rain has muddied the river and it will probably take a couple of days generation to improve water clarity. As soon as the White River is able to take the additional water, the Corps will release two units on a 24-hour basis until the lake level returns to normal. Drift fishing will be the only option until the water recedes. Dripping Springs Landing at Pangburn will be closed indefinitely because of a mudslide and debris. Always check before heading to the Little Red River by calling the Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District water data system (501) 362-5150 for Greers Ferry Dam water release information or check the Corps of Engineers website (www.swl-wc.usace.army.mil) for real-time water release and the Southwestern Power Administration website (swpa.gov) to see forecasted generation schedule.

WHITE RIVER Rim Shoals is the hot spot. The hot flies were olive Woolly Buggers (sizes 8, 10), Y2Ks (sizes 14, 12), prince nymphs (size 14), zebra midges (black with silver wire and silver bead or red with silver wire and silver bead sizes 16, 18), pheasant tails (size 14), ruby midges (size 18), root beer midges (size 18), pink and cerise San Juan worms (size 10), and sowbugs (size 16). Double-fly nymph rigs have been very effective, the best being a size 10 Y2K with a size 14 ruby midge suspended below). Use lead to sink your flies.
NORFORK TAILWATER The Norfork has cleared substantially but has fished poorly. The most productive flies have been small midge patterns (sizes 18, 20, 22) like ruby midges, root beer midges, zebra midges (black or red with silver wire and silver bead) and soft hackles (sizes 14, 16) like the Green Butt. Egg patterns also have been productive. Double-fly nymph rigs have been very effective. Try a small bead headed nymph (zebra midge, Copper John or pheasant tail) suspended 18 inches below a brightly colored San Juan worm (hot fluorescent pink or cerise size 10). The fishing is better in the morning. John's favorite rig has been a Y2K with a ruby midge dropper. Dry Run Creek has cleared some and still fishing well. Brown trout have moved in for the spawn. The hot flies have been sowbugs (size 14), Y2Ks (size 12) and various colored San Juan worms (worm brown, red, hot fluorescent pink and cerise size 10).

BEAVER TAILWATER The river is low, but trout fishing has very good this week. Most trout are being caught between Spider Creek, Parker Bottoms and U.S. 62 bridge. Trout are biting on various quarter-ounce spoons and various PowerBaits fished with light terminal tackle. The water temperature in the area mentioned above has been between 45 and 50 degrees.

SPRING RIVER Water flow is at nearly 440 cfs , and the river should clear up by the weekend. Woolly Buggers and Y2Ks will be hot on the fly. Hot pink and red and black Trout Magnets will work great with a spinning rod with these conditions. The higher water will make for tough wading, so use a wading staff.

LAKE HAMILTON TAILWATER 10 inches of rainfall in the Hot Springs area last week led to open flood gates and very heavy generation below Carpenter Dam. Extremely muddy water and fast currents have been the norm for the past week. Entergy will open flood gates again and schedule heavier generation to drain water. This process will take weeks to bring Lake Ouachita out of flood pool along with regulating area lake levels close to normal. Little fishing has taken place in the Carpenter Dam tailrace due to the treacherous conditions. All boaters and bank fishermen are urged to keep off the lake until the situation has been brought to normal.
