CLASS 6A Girls: Jonesboro gets rid of jitters

Jonesboro 71, Siloam Springs 42

WEST MEMPHIS -- Jodi Christenberry's main objective Wednesday in the first round of the Class 6A state tournament was to "get the jitters out."

Mission accomplished.

Christenberry's Jonesboro girls led wire to wire and used a strong second half to record a 71-42 victory over Siloam Springs.

"We would have liked a [first-round] bye, but the negatives from that are having to sit around and play late in the week," said Christenberry, whose team improved to 24-7. "First-game jitters are now out of the way and we feel good."

The Lady Hurricane will face Russellville today at 7 p.m. in a quarterfinal game.

Jonesboro led Siloam Springs (9-22) 34-22 at halftime but wasted no time putting the Lady Panthers away in the third quarter. The Lady Hurricane reeled off the first seven points of the quarter and built a 56-30 cushion heading into the fourth quarter.

Christenberry said she was concerned early in the game when Siloam Springs controlled the backboards.

"Rebounding is always a concern for us," she said. "A lot of times when that happens we turn up the pressure on defense, and it ends up giving us a lot of easy baskets."

Sophomore Elauna Eaton scored 11 of her game-high 21 points in the first half. She got support from fellow sophomore Kianna Hardaway and junior Brooklyn Dooley, each of whom scored nine points.

Siloam Springs was led by Shelby Johnson with 18 points while Chloe Price hit nine.

SHERIDAN 42, LR HALL 30

Diamond Morris and Sarah Moore combined for 31 points as Sheridan outlasted Little Rock Hall.

Fourteen of Sheridan's first 16 shots from the field were three-pointers. The Lady Yellow Jackets (23-7) connected on 8 of 29 from beyond the arc, but they made enough to offset a 32-24 rebounding deficit.

"We actually try not to take that many threes, but we end up doing it," Sheridan Coach Jamison Ingram said. "We don't have a whole lot of size, but we have a whole lot of shooters."

Morris led all scorers with 17 points while Moore added 14. Moore hit four three-pointers while Morris had three.

Hall got 11 points from Allexis Adams.

MOUNTAIN HOME 37,

BENTON 27

Hannah Pfeifer connected on four three-pointers to lead the Lady Bombers to a victory over the Lady Panthers. Pfeifer hit 3 of her three-pointers in the first half as Mountain Home (15-15) took an 18-8 lead at halftime. Anna Grace Foreman carried the load for the Lady Bombers in the second half, scoring all six of her points in the final two quarters. Benton got 11 points from Makenzy Davidson.
