PINE BLUFF -- A white man named Pressley was given a hearing before United States Commissioner A.L. Burnett yesterday on a charge of disloyalty and was remanded to jail to await action of the federal Grand Jury. At the hearing Pressley made several disloyal remarks, which almost precipitated a riot in the courtroom. He was formerly employed at a local spoke mill and was arrested after he is alleged to have expressed the wish "that every American troop ship that started for France would be sunk."

• GEORGETOWN -- A fire in a towboat's engine Monday morning on the White River forced its crew to abandon ship, temporarily allowing it and two barges to drift out of control. No one was injured, but the vessel is likely to be a total loss, its owner said. It is unknown what caused the fire on the Murray L. II, which was insured for $500,000. The fire occurred between 9 and 10 a.m., about 10 miles above Georgetown, Delia Edens of the Agusta Barge Co. said. Pilot Larry Thayer and two deckhands, Jerry Hicks and Andy Anderson, all of Agusta, were rescued by small craft nearby, Edens said.
