NORTH LITTLE ROCK -- Mayor Laman announced a crackdown on the abuse of sick leave privileges by city employees Monday at the end of a brief routine City Council meeting. Beginning this morning, Laman told the aldermen, a Health Department representative will visit the home of each employee who calls in sick to determine whether or not the worker is ill. "In the event they are not ill," Laman declared, "these people will be fired."

ATHENS -- Tucked away under a canopy of pine trees near Blaylock Creek in the Albert Pike Recreation Area of Montgomery County, seven amateur and professional archaeologists painstakingly detail the remains of a Caddo house built around 1400. "This is such a tiny little flat in a tiny little valley -- just what did they have here?" asks Dr. Ann Early of Henderson State University in Arkadelphia. Early watched as a worker worked a trowel on the remains of an upright timber that once anchored a corner of this box-shaped house in the "Winding Stair" site.

• The husband of a woman suspected of killing her 14-year-old niece in 1999 in the couple's Ozark home pleaded guilty Tuesday to a related federal charge, admitting he helped bury the body and hide the murder. Meanwhile, a federal prosecutor said authorities have been digging for several weeks in various places in the Ozark forest trying, unsuccessfully so far, to pinpoint the burial site. A grand jury indictment handed up Feb. 8 alleges that Wanda Faye Richart, 50, and her husband, Charles Walter "Bubba" Richart, 54, both of Kingsland in Cleveland County, lied to FBI agents investigating the possible kidnapping of the couples' niece, Christina Richart.
