• The father of a Jacksonville woman who police say was raped and killed by Ledell Lee in 1989 says he's satisfied with the job done by the Jacksonville Police Department in handling the case. Lee, 27, of Jacksonville, now in state prison for a parole violation and awaiting a trial in a February murder, was charged Thursday in the rapes, murder and attempted murder of two other women and is a suspect in the slayings of two more women, all from Jacksonville. He had been released on parole in November 1992 over the objections of Assistant Chief Larry Hibbs of the Jacksonville Police Department, who warned that Lee was the suspect in a murder.

• An El Dorado man serving 36 years in prison on drug charges has been given a chance at freedom and starting over, and both the defense attorney and the prosecutor say they couldn't be happier about it. Defense attorney Craig Lambert of Little Rock said Wednesday that Jerry Miller's fortunes changed for the better Tuesday, when Union County Circuit Judge Carol Anthony granted Miller's motion for a new trial based on ineffective assistance of counsel. While granting such a motion is rare, it wasn't a hard decision for Anthony, since even the prosecutor conceded that a new trial was only fair.
