June 18, 1918
• Octavio Stevens, negress, was fined $50 and costs and sentenced to serve 30 days on the county farm on a charge of assault with a knife. The trouble started when Marguerite Jordan, negress, who roomed with the Stevens woman, found her clothes all cut to strips. The Jordan woman, accompanied by Paul Chaney, negro patrolman, went to her house to have Octavio placed under arrest. The Jordan woman entered the house first, followed by Chaney, and as she entered, Octavio, who was hidden behind the door, sank a pocket knife into the Jordan woman's back. Her condition is not serious.

• Carlton Joseph Carney, 18, who escaped Saturday from Tucker Prison Farm, was captured about 10:30 p.m. Sunday at the Independent Linen Company at 1901 Woodrow Street by police who went to the building after a burglar alarm went off at the Little Rock Police and Courts Building. Patrolmen found evidence that the building had been entered and went inside, where they found that two soft drink machines had been pried open and the change removed. A patrolman outside saw two men run through a fenced area south of the building. The two were apprehended inside the fenced area.

• Little Rock police fatally shot a man described as a talented commercial artist after he answered a knock at his door Wednesday and allegedly pointed a loaded pistol at one of two police officers standing there. Richard D. Polk, 47, was shot to death in the doorway of his home at 3200 Washington St. after police accompanied Polk's ex-wife to the house. Each officer fired four rounds at Polk after he opened the door holding a 9mm pistol, police said. Police spokesman Lt. Charles Holladay said both uniformed officers identified themselves repeatedly before the shooting at 10:30 p.m.

• The director of nursing at a maximum security state prison was arrested last week after correction officers, conducting a routine search at the prison entrance, found seven bags of tobacco hidden in her umbrella, authorities confirmed Tuesday. The employee -- identified by law enforcement officials as 33-year-old Rolanda Barron -- was attempting to enter the Maximum Security Unit at Tucker about 7:30 p.m. June 9 when the contraband was discovered, Department of Correction spokesman Dina Tyler said.
