The Walton Arts Center lauded Billie Starr, a founding patron and honorary event committee chairwoman, June 9 at the Art of Wine Winemaker's Dinner at the center in Fayetteville.

Kristin Scheeler, Columbia Winery associate winemaker, walked guests through the Columbia wines that were paired with the menu created by Chef Matthew Barclay of Bordinos Restaurant and Wine Bar in Fayetteville.

Arts education and outreach programs will reap the benefits of the tasting dinner. Supported programs include the Colgate Classroom Series, Arkansas History Through the Arts and Arts With Education Institute (AWE). The center reached some 35,000 students in the past year through education offerings.

Starr told those gathered about the formation and early days of the 26-year-old arts center. "Education was at the forefront. If you don't have kids and education, you have no future (as an organization.)"

When school buses full of kids started coming to the arts center, "it was an indication something was being done right. (Theater) is magic. It's mystery. You don't have to have a screen or a remote. Those school buses say something about who we are."

Winemaker's Dinner committee members were Patty and Serrhel Adams, Becky and Bob Alexander, Shannon and Michael Arcana, Mary and George Benjamin, Cynthia Coughlin, Mary Ann and Reed Greenwood, Ann and Morriss Henry, Hannah and Greg Lee, Linda and Steve Nelson, Pamm and Paul Prebil, Shareen and Alan Pruitt, Mary Lynn Reese and Sara and Kent Starr.
