Officers on Thursday arrested a man accused of shooting his pregnant girlfriend during a dispute at her west Little Rock apartment, police said.

Cortez Handley, 21, was taken into custody about 8 p.m. Wednesday, according to an arrest report.

Officers were called to the Fairfield Apartments, 1912 Green Mountain Drive, about 10 p.m. Saturday, a police report states. Amber Davis, 24, told officers she was at her residence after she picked up Handley from work and dropped him off at his mother's house in the 1000 block of Patton Place.

A short time later, someone dropped Handley off at Davis' apartment, and the two began arguing. Handley pulled out a handgun and started firing, hitting Davis twice, once in her leg and once in her stomach, the arrest report states. Davis was said to be 21 weeks pregnant.

Authorities said one bullet went through the wall into a neighboring apartment, where two adults and a 5-year-old child were inside, but no one in that unit was hurt.

Handley then went to Davis and began punching her in the face, knocking out a tooth, she told police. A witness added that Handley stomped on her and fired the gun again as he was leaving the apartment, the report said.

The witness drove Davis to the emergency room at Baptist Medical Health Center, where doctors found a bullet in her abdomen, according to police.

Handley is charged with first-degree domestic battery, three counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a certain person, records show. As of Thursday evening, he was being held in lieu of $500,000 bond at the Pulaski County jail, according to the online inmate roster.

4 kids found alone; sitter faces charges

Authorities arrested a North Little Rock woman accused of leaving four children under the age of 9 in an apartment while she went to get her car repaired, according to a police report.

An officer said he was at the Shorter College Garden apartments at 10:45 a.m. Monday investigating "an unrelated disturbance" when he saw a 1-year-old wearing only a diaper walking barefoot through the parking lot unattended.

After searching the complex in the 800 block of North Beech Street in North Little Rock, authorities found three 8-year-olds by themselves in an open apartment, according to the report. The children told police that 19-year-old Rachel Alexander had been watching them but had left.

Officers called Alexander, who reportedly said she was in Little Rock with her sister to get her car repaired. During the conversation, she originally lied to police, saying she had left the children with a woman named Shay, and refused to return to the apartment, according to the report.

Police wrote that her sister arrived instead and told authorities Alexander had stayed behind because she was afraid of being arrested. Alexander arrived shortly after and told police that she had left the sleeping children alone in the apartment because she did not want to wake them, the report states.

Alexander was arrested and booked at 1:40 p.m. into the Pulaski County jail on four counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor. Records show she remained in the jail Thursday in lieu of $10,000 bond.
