Craig seeking mayor's position in Cave Springs

BENTONVILLE -- John Craig is throwing his name into the ring to be Cave Springs' next mayor.

He announced recently he will be a mayoral candidate in the Nov. 6 general election.

"I have always been passionate about this city and the people, past and present that I have considered family," Craig said. "Several in the city have asked me in the past to consider the position, but through prayer and consulting with family members, it was just the right time."

Craig believes he has the experience and community involvement to lead the city.

"Our city has become plagued with controversies and negative issues that seem to continue," he said. "We have to work together as a team to overcome these obstacles."

Craig, who has been a Cave Springs resident for 38 years, has served on the city's Planning Commission and City Council.

The most important goal for Craig if he is elected is to get the city's finances in order. He said he would appoint a committee led by the city treasurer/recorder to review the financial issues of the city and make that information available to the public and be posted on the city's website.

"Those numbers as well as expenditures have to be tracked better and more transparency to the public as to where their tax dollars are spent," he said.

Craig is the second person to announce to seek the mayoral position. Councilman Randall Noblett announced his candidacy in May.

Mayor Travis Lee has not announced whether he will seek a second term.

The term for Cave Springs' mayor is four years, and the annual salary is $60,000.

Candidates for municipal offices begin filing noon, July 27 through noon, Aug. 17.
