Assault, robbery reported to police

Little Rock police are investigating an assault and a robbery that were reported early Friday.

The assault occurred around 1:15 a.m. near the German restaurant Fassler Hall, 311 E. Capitol Ave, according to a report from the city's Police Department.

Authorities said three people beat up a homeless man, demanding that he "Give it up." When the victim said he didn't have any money, the attackers reportedly fled on foot. The victim was taken to UAMS Medical Center to be treated for a split lip and a missing tooth, police said.

About four hours later, officers went to the 600 block of Townsend Street, where a 51-year-old victim said a man approached him holding a handgun and said, "Give me what you got," according to a separate report.

The Little Rock resident handed over his white New Balance tennis shoes valued at $30 before the gunman got in a vehicle that headed east on Sixth Street, authorities said.

No arrests had been made at the time of the reports.

Victim of shooting ID'd; man arrested

Police have identified a central Arkansas man who was critically hurt in a Little Rock shooting that prompted a tactical unit response Thursday night, and they said the suspected gunman is in custody.

Kirk Shelnut, 47, who was taken to UAMS Medical Center in critical condition after being shot multiple times, "should survive," authorities said Friday.

According to a Little Rock Police Department report, Shelnut had gone to Donaldson Brown's house in the 4300 block of Arapaho Trail with a 40-year-old woman to repay some money they owed, but Brown was upset that the full amount wasn't repaid.

Police said a physical fight followed, after which Shelnut told Brown he loved him and didn't know why they had fought. Brown then retrieved a gun, shot Shelnut twice in the neck and left the area, authorities said.

Officers called the department's tactical team, and when Brown returned an hour later, he surrendered to authorities and was arrested, according to the report.

The 50-year-old Little Rock resident faces charges of first-degree battery. He was booked at 3:30 a.m. Friday into the Pulaski County jail, where records show he remained Saturday in lieu of $50,000 bond.

Michael Lewis, 62, was taken into custody around 6:45 a.m. Thursday at Pleasant Valley Pointe, 11810 Pleasant Ridge Road, according to a report from the Little Rock Police Department.

Authorities said that while executing a search warrant at the apartment complex, they observed images "depicting sexually explicit conduct involving a child."

Lewis remained at the Pulaski County jail as of Saturday evening, according to an online inmate roster, and bail had been set at $500,000. Records show he was being held for the FBI.

Woman describes hammer assault

A man was arrested Wednesday in North Little Rock after a relative told police that he attacked her with a hammer when she revealed she had HIV.

Authorities responded just after 5 a.m. to the 2000 block of Fendley Drive, where they found Gregory Brewer "breathing heavily" in the middle of the street, according to a police report. The 58-year-old told officers that a woman had a gun and was tearing up the inside of his house.

When police went inside, they found a toy revolver on the floor and two children, ages 8 and 9. Their mother was found lying on the bathroom floor upstairs, authorities said.

The 31-year-old woman told officers that Brewer had "freaked out" when she told him she was HIV-positive. Brewer then chased the woman around the house with a hammer, pushed her down, put his knees on her ribcage and choked her with the handle of the hammer until she passed out, the report states.

The woman's 8-year-old daughter tried to intervene, the 31-year-old said, but Brewer kicked her in the stomach and knocked her down.

The 58-year-old North Little Rock man faces charges of second-degree domestic battery and aggravated assault on a family member. Records show he remained at the Pulaski County jail Saturday evening in lieu of $25,000 bond.
