School check-ins set this week in LR

The Little Rock School District is holding its annual check- in registration for the 2018-19 school year from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at all schools.

Physical check-in at a campus by a student and parent is not mandatory, but parents are urged by the district to visit their child's school for information on calendars, school uniforms and other information.

Online registration is mandatory for families of district students who are new to the district and for those who were enrolled in the district this past year.

Online sign-ups on at county schools

Online student registration for the 2018-19 school year in the Pulaski County Special School District is ongoing for returning and new students at the following district website link:

pcssd.org/register

Any problems with logging into the site should be directed to the student's school.

Returning students must be registered online before the first day of school, Aug. 13, to receive access to Chromebooks and student schedules.

NLR schools set event for Acklin

The North Little Rock School Board is hosting a reception for newly appointed Interim Superintendent Bobby Acklin.

The event will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Performing Arts Center Lobby at North Little Rock High School.

Acklin is a former assistant superintendent in the North Little Rock School District.

Back-to-school bash set at center

The Clinton Presidential Center, 1200 President Clinton Ave., is hosting the 2018 Head of the Class Bash, a free family festival from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

During the festival, 3,000 backpacks filled with required school supplies will be distributed to students on a first-come, first-served basis.

The event is sponsored by the Arkansas 529 College Investment Plan, the Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable Trust, and 3M.

Head of the Class Bash will also offer healthy cooking demonstrations by 42 Bar and Table restaurant. Free slices of fresh watermelons and a bag of pantry staples will be available.

There will also be free pediatric vision screenings provided by the Lions Club and the Rural Ophthalmology Optometry Treatment and Screening organization, free health screenings provided by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, free Immunizations provided by the Arkansas Department of Health/Pulaski County Central Health Unit, and free dental screenings sponsored by the Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation.

Hands-on activities and prizes will be provided by the The AR Finance AR Future program in financial education and the Arkansas STEM Coalition.

Teacher sessions cover economics

Economics Arkansas, an educational nonprofit organization, is offering two workshops for teachers this week.

Teaching Free Enterprise in Arkansas, a course on how to "stir the entrepreneurial passion in the future workforce," is for teachers of students in grades nine through 12. The course is being taught in partnership with the Arkansas Center for Research in Economics. It will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the University of Central Arkansas' Brewer Hegeman Center, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway.

Economics and the Environment, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday is a course for teachers in grades three through 12. Winrock International is partnering with Economics Arkansas to offer the course and is the host site at 2101 Riverfront Drive, Little Rock.

Professional development credit is available for completing both courses.
