A Hot Springs man accused of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl earlier this year was arrested Sunday evening.

Shaun Dale James, 40, of Hot Springs was taken into custody by police around 6:45 p.m. in the 200 block of Carl Drive on a charge of second-degree sexual assault.

He appeared Monday in Garland County District Court and remained at the jail Tuesday afternoon in lieu of $25,000 bond.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Garland County sheriff's investigator Jennifer Tonseth received a report May 28 regarding alleged sexual contact with a 9-year-old girl by James.

On May 30, the girl was interviewed at the Cooper-Anthony Mercy Child Advocacy Center and told officials she was asleep when James removed her shorts and underwear and sexually assaulted her. She said that she told James to stop, court documents show.

James was interviewed June 8 at the Garland County jail and told investigators he went into the bedroom where the girl was sleeping.

According to the affidavit, he said: "A lot of alcohol happened. I know I didn't go that far. I didn't hardly do nothing. I may have been inappropriate in a way, nothing meant by it."

Questioned on the specifics of the allegations, police said that James added that he remembered "being in there. I don't remember all of that, I know all of that didn't happen."
