Environmentally concerned citizens can become engaged in NestWatch. It is a joint project between the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center.

NestWatch is a citizen-science activity that gathers data on nesting birds. It involves four basic steps.

1. Certification as a NestWatch volunteer, which includes learning appropriate data collection methods to ensure that you are not taking steps that might injure or threaten birds.

2. Getting help finding one or more active nests.

3. Visiting the nests every three or four days to collect data, such as how many eggs are laid, how many hatch and when birds leave the nest.

4. Reporting the data online, so professional scientists can use the information to make broader conclusions about migration, populations and environmental health.
