A Little Rock woman was hospitalized Saturday after a residence caught fire.

Firefighters were dispatched to 81 Broadmoor Drive at 4:19 p.m. after someone reported that flames were visible from the front door of the residence, Capt. Jason Weaver of the Little Rock Fire Department said.

One woman was hospitalized with minor burns on her legs, Weaver said.

All five members of the family -- two adults and three children -- were home at the time of the fire, Weaver said, but no one else was injured. Weaver said the children's father tried to put out the fire with a small extinguisher, but the fire had already become too large.

Neighbors crowded along the sides of the street while firefighters worked in sweltering summer heat to put out the flames.

A few members of the family gathered and sat on a nearby curb. A little boy with a red face clutched a model airplane larger than he was while the firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

Weaver said the children's mother, who was burned, has a medical condition and initially could not get out of the house.

It was a daughter who "got the woman out of the house and into the backyard," Weaver said.

Firefighters treated the woman until emergency medical workers could take her to a hospital, he said.

The fire destroyed the brick residence, leaving the family now displaced. Family members contacted the Red Cross to seek help in getting a place to stay for the night, Weaver said.
