July 18, 1918

• EARLE -- Plans and specifications for the new $100,000 dormitory building of Galloway College at Searcy are complete and yesterday T. T. Reddick of Fort Smith was employed as superintendent of building. The work will begin as soon as material can be placed on the ground. The Rev. J. H. O'Bryant, presiding elder of the Searcy district, has been elected commissioner. The Rev. Mr. O'Bryant will complete his year on the district, but at the same time plan the organization of the work for the next year.

July 18, 1968

• The University of Arkansas Medical Center has received a $40,000 grant to complete a master plan for development of the Center by the John and Mary R. Markle Foundation of New York. The Foundation, established in 1927 by John Markle, has centered its interest in medical education since 1935. Lester Gorsline Associates of California, which did a preliminary study of existing facilities, will develop in the next five months a plan for expansion of the Center.

• People born in May, June, and July are three times as likely to have dyslexia as those born at other times of the year, a study by Dr. Richard Livingston of Arkansas Children's Hospital found. Dyslexia is a type of reading disability often characterized by the transposition of letters or by reading letters backward. Livingston tests children for dyslexia at the hospital's Child Study Center. His study found the birth season's impact was most pronounced from 1950 to 1954 when there was a flu epidemic.

• Little Rock police have released the names of the three detectives involved in the Wednesday shooting death of a 25-year-old Sherwood man they were questioning about a burglary. Police say William C. Spradling was shot and killed Wednesday morning when he pointed a handgun at the detectives. All three detectives fired in response. A police report released Thursday identified the detectives as: Sgt. Steve Woodall, the burglary unit supervisor who is an 18-year veteran; detective Clay Hastings, a 13-year veteran; and detective Michael Ford, a five-year veteran. Three other officers were at the scene, but none of them used a weapon.
