A Nashville man and a Hope man were killed in a two-car collision in a curve on a highway in Hempstead County on Friday night, authorities said.

It happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. on U.S. 278 in Ozan when an eastbound Mazda 3 veered out of control and crossed into the westbound lanes, where it struck a Nissan Altima, according to an Arkansas State Police report. Both cars then ran off the highway.

The Mazda driver, identified as 27-year-old Edward Fizer of Nashville, died at a hospital in Hot Springs about two hours after the crash, police wrote. A passenger in the Nissan, 73-year-old Jeff White of Hope, reportedly died at the scene.

The Nissan driver and a second passenger in that car were listed as being hurt, though the report didn't specify the extent of their injuries. Police also didn't indicate what may have caused the Mazda to lose control in the curve. Conditions at the time were said to be clear and dry.

At least 233 people have died in traffic crashes in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
