Petitions offered to city candidates

Petition packets are available at the North Little Rock city clerk's office at City Hall, 300 Main St., for potential candidates to seek municipal positions in the Nov. 6 general election.

Candidates will be able to file for election from July 27 through noon Aug. 17.

Ward candidates must obtain a minimum of 30 signatures from registered voters from within their ward. Citywide candidates must obtain a minimum of 30 signatures from registered voters from within the entire city. Completed petitions must be filed with the office of the Pulaski County Circuit Court by the deadline.

North Little Rock incumbents up for re-election are Ward 1 council member Debi Ross, Ward 2 council member Linda Robinson, Ward 3 council member Steve Baxter and City Attorney Amy Fields. The Ward 4 Position 1 council seat will be open, as council member Murry Witcher has announced he will not run for an eighth term.

All terms are for four years, beginning Jan. 1.

Filings for municipal offices in Little Rock, Maumelle and Cammack Village also will be during the same period. Filings for Sherwood and Jacksonville municipal positions were in May.

Fireworks banned in NLR city limits

With July Fourth coming up, the North Little Rock Fire Department is reminding residents and visitors that fireworks of all kinds are illegal within the city limits.

It is unlawful for anyone to "possess, store, offer for sale, sell at retail, ignite or otherwise explode" fireworks of any kind within North Little Rock, city Fire Marshal John Pflasterer said in a news release.

Violation of the law regarding fireworks will result in confiscation of the fireworks and a possible fine ranging from $25 to more than $500 upon conviction in municipal court, the news release said.

Residents can report the use of fireworks by calling the North Little Rock Police Department's nonemergency number, (501) 758-1234.

City says peddlers must have permits

Because summer usually leads to an increase in door-to-door salesmen, residents need to be careful that solicitors have a valid city permit, the North Little Rock Neighborhood Services Department said in its bimonthly newsletter.

Peddler's permits are issued by the North Little Rock city clerk-treasurer's office. The city-issued permit and a photo ID should be displayed for residents to see.

If a peddler is unable to produce a city permit, residents can phone the nonemergency number of the North Little Rock Police Department, (501) 758-1234, to give their location, a description of the person and their vehicle, and the license plate number if possible.

The city clerk's office also reminds homeowners that house numbers painted on curbs in front of homes aren't required by the city and that any type of painted logo is prohibited on curbs, which are city property.

Discounts offered on booths at event

Business vendors can take advantage of an "early bird" discount through Friday for registering for a booth at the North Little Rock Chamber of Commerce's A Taste for Business event, set for Sept. 27 at Verizon Arena.

Booth space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis, according to a chamber news release.

The annual event provides a networking opportunity for local businesses while samples of food and drink from chamber member restaurants and caterers will be provided.

More information is available by calling the chamber at (501) 372-5959 or visiting the chamber's website at nlrchamber.org.
