• They streamed in at Little Rock Air Force Base Friday morning, most of the 769 Arkansas Air National Guardsmen ordered to active duty in the Pueblo crisis, and signed in for a very uncertain future. By 11 a.m., an hour past the deadline, it was estimated that 90 percent of the members of the 189th Tactical Reconnaissance Group and three support units had reported for duty as ordered. They would not be held AWOL until midnight Friday, and Col. Drew F. Holbrook, commanding officer of the 189th, said individual cases would be dealt with as they arose.

GREENBRIER -- When Helen Kirkpatrick left for the store Monday morning her grandson was playing with the chickens and her granddaughter was playing with a doll. When she returned home they were dead. Authorities said her son, Randy Kirkpatrick, 30, shot his children in the head and then turned the shotgun on himself. "It was the worst thing you ever walked into," Helen Kirkpatrick said, crying. "I thought I'd die before everybody got there."

• Sherwood aldermen will likely move Monday to condemn the vacant 105-acre North Hills Country Club they hope could one day be a city park. Councilmen decided in a meeting Thursday that condemning the property would be the best option and one that could end a lawsuit from the club's owner, said aldermen Becki Vassar and Charles Harmon, whose ward includes the property. On more than one occasion, city officials have halted development on the golf course that owners wanted to sell and turn into a subdivision. "We are hoping, planning to pass an ordinance to take the property -- the North Hills Country Club property -- by eminent domain, or condemnation, and pay the owner for the property," Vassar said Saturday.
