Wal-Mart Stores Inc. conducted a larger round of job cuts at its corporate offices in Bentonville on Thursday, eliminating positions across several departments.
Multiple sources inside the company said corporate-level job cuts occurred in the retailer’s merchandising, real estate, finance, human resources, technology and global business services operations. Some job cuts occurred in the company’s marketing department Wednesday, according to sources.

Wal-Mart declined to reveal the number of jobs that have been eliminated this week at the home office. One source said the number of affected employees is fewer than 500.
Wal-Mart spokesman Randy Hargrove said the company has been looking at its structure for some time as the retailer explores ways to operate more effectively.
“We understand these changes affect a number of our friends and colleagues, for whom we care deeply,” Hargrove said Thursday. “We appreciate their important contributions to our company. We’re committed to handling every transition smoothly and ensuring everyone is treated as fairly and respectfully as possible.”
