Club news

The Garden Club of Rogers works with the Pre-K school in Rogers on a monthly basis. They have several projects throughout the school year. Most recently, the club had a lesson on butterflies. Sherrie Eoff, chairman of the youth gardening initiative, has butterfly habitats for each class that she can leave with them. They can watch the butterflies as the emerge from a caterpillar into a mature butterfly. The children are able to release the butterflies into the wild. There are six classes totaling about 120 children. The club works with three classes a day for two days.

Teachers

The Washington County Retired Teachers Association will meet Monday at the Western Sizzlin' in Springdale. Registration begins at 11 a.m. with a buffet and business meeting following at 11:30 a.m.

The program for this meeting will be "Trafficking" by Charla Watkins. Members should bring items for the various charitable donations sponsored.

Cancer

"Viviendo con Cancer" will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale.

This supportive and educational group is for adult Hispanic patients, caregivers, families and friends coping with any type of cancer. All group communication will be in Spanish.

Veterans

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will have their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at Foghorns Restaurant, 2221 W. Walnut in Rogers. Dinner will be at 6 p.m. The Sons of Union Veterans is a fraternal organization honoring the heritage of those who fought for the United States during the Civil War. The meeting is open to the public.

Pieces 'N Patches

Pieces 'N Patches quilt group will meet at 10 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, 1901 S. 26th St. in Rogers.

The program is titled "Gadgets, Gizmos and Organization." There will be open sew after the program.

Next meeting is Feb. 5. Grace Graeme will host the Valentine festivities.

The group meets at 12:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month for programs and at 10 a.m. on the third Monday for workshops. Snacks will be served on program days, and participants should bring lunch on workshop days; beverages will be provided. Visitors are welcome.

GOP Women

The Benton County Republican Women's Club will meet at noon Tuesday at Pleasant Crossing Golden Corral in Rogers. The speaker will be Loren Spivack, the "Free Market Warrior."

Hailing from Massachusetts and then New York City, Spivack gives seminars on economic literacy all over the United States. Before becoming active in politics, Spivack worked for several nonprofits and as a management consultant for both profit and nonprofit companies. Spivack is a popular author, political activist, economist and highly sought after speaker on economics.

GOP Committee

The Washington County Republican Committee monthly meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Willie James Event Place, 1161 W. Henri De Tonti Blvd. in Springdale. Doors will open for registration at 6:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson. Attendance is likely to be larger than normal, so arrive as soon as possible to ensure a seat.

Tickets will also be available for the Lincoln Day Event on Feb. 3. Tom Cotton will be the featured speaker at the Springdale High School auditorium. Tickets are $25 and $50.

Democrats

The Northwest Arkansas Senior Democrats will meet at noon Tuesday at Western Sizzlin' in Springdale. They will host Kim Snow, a candidate for the House of Representatives from District 80. District 80 encompasses parts of northwest Fayetteville, Prairie Grove, Lincoln and western Washington County, continuing through the western part of Crawford County.

The group will also welcome Gary Morris, candidate for House District 97. District 97 encompasses eastern Springdale north to the Eureka Springs area.

The candidates will be discussing their platforms and answering questions from the group.

Modern Quilts

The Northwest Arkansas Modern Quilt Guild will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Southside Church of Christ, 919 S. Dixieland Road in Rogers. President Elizabeth Ray will present the program on the national guild and what services its website provides to members.

DAR

The Ozark Mountains Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will meet at 11 a.m. Thursday at Simmons Bank, 3975 W. New Hope Road in Rogers. Brenda Bowen-Cox, a harpist, will present the program, "Healing With Harps." Anyone interested in joining DAR is welcome.

Orchid Society

The Orchid Society of the Ozarks will meet at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at Northwest Technical Institute, 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale. The club will hold its annual chili fest and "What's wrong with this plant?" roundtable discussion.

Anyone interested in growing orchids is welcome to attend regular meetings on the third Sunday of most months. The objective of the society is to stimulate interest in orchids and their culture. Monthly plant judging and raffles, the March show and sale at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks and annual public auction offer affordable orchids and supplies for new and experienced growers.

Ostomates

The Northwest Arkansas Ostomy Education and Support Group will meet at 2 p.m. Jan. 21 at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale. There will be a 1 p.m. educational meeting prior to the main meeting. This month will be a question-and-answer session. Calico Cut-Ups

Calico Cut-Up, a quilt guild in Bella Vista where all quilters, experienced or inexperienced, come together and learn all aspects of quilting, will meet at 1 p.m. Jan 22 at the First United Methodist Church, 20 Boyce Drive in Bella Vista.

To start the year out, there will be a Stash for Cash event. Anyone who has a stash of quilting supplies that they would like to clear out of their house is invited to bring it to the church at 10:30 a.m. the morning of the meeting. Tables will be set up and participants can display their items and at 11:30 a.m. the selling of the items begins.

The speaker will begin at 1 p.m. Alice McElwain is a past president of the Calico Cut-Ups, quilt appraiser, teacher, quilt show judge and former quilt shop owner. She will give tips on how to prepare quilts for judging. She will help explain what judges look for when judging a quilt. McElwain is a AQS certified quilt appraiser and will be appraising quilts at the April quilt show. She is very knowledgeable about quilting and the history of quilts.

There is a $5 fee for nonmembers of the guild to help pay for the speaker. Dues for the year are $25 to become a member.

Radio Club

The next meeting of the Hogville Amateur Radio Club will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 22 at Springdale Firehouse No. 1, 417 Holcomb St. in Springdale. Participants do not need to be a member or licensed amateur operator to attend the meetings. Those who have ever considered being a ham radio operator are welcome to attend the meeting and learn what the hobby is all about. The group offers several free classes each year.

Benton County Dems

The Benton County Dems will meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 22 at Golden Corral in Rogers. The program features Jon Comstock, who draws from Deborah Tannen's book The Argument Culture to describe how the adversarial nature of society impacts relationships, ability to solve problems and public discourse in the press, politics and the law. Tannen's book is used as a platform for looking at moving beyond the "argument culture" to more constructive dialog about important issues.

QUILT

Quilters United in Learning Together will kick off the new year at 6 p.m. Jan. 25 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2898 S. 48th St. in Springdale, with a trunk show by Kathy Kansier. Kansier, a southwest Missouri resident, is a teacher and certified quilt appraiser. She was a nominee for teacher of the year in 2001 and in 2008 was awarded the prestigious Jewel Pearce Patterson Scholarship for quilting teachers. Her book Ozark Varieties is a favorite among applique enthusiasts.

Stage IV

Hope Cancer Resources offers a support group for men and women living with any type of stage IV cancer. This month's meeting will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 26 at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale. Members must RSVP.

PFLAG

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays of Northwest Arkansas will hold a free screening of the film Gender Revolution: A Journey with Katie Couric, produced by National Geographic, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Fayetteville Public Library in Fayetteville.

The film presents an in-depth look at the role of genetics, modern culture and brain chemistry on gender fluidity. Couric travels the United States to talk with families, scientists, psychologists and educators about the complex issue of gender. PFLAG issues a special invitation to parents, family members, and friends of anyone who is transgender or gender fluid. Attendees can ask questions during a moderated discussion following the film. PFLAG will serve simple refreshments and have a drawing for door prizes.

Ham Radio

The Bella Vista Ham Radio Club meets at 11 a.m. on the first Thursday of every month at Highland Christian Church. Meetings are open to the public, and new members are welcome. The club also offers amateur radio license testing through the American Radio Relay League at 2 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month at the church.

Artists

The Bella Vista Decorative Artists meet at 9 a.m. the second Saturday of each month for a business meeting and painting session at Wishing Spring Studio at 8862 W. McNelly Road, next to Walgreens. The purpose of the chapter is to stimulate interest and appreciation for the art of painting.

BVDA also does a variety of service projects. This year, the chapter is working with the Village House in Bella Vista, Children's Shelter and making memory boxes for local hospitals.

Each month BVDA has a chapter member or a visiting national artist teach an art project in acrylics, oils, watercolor or mixed mediums. Painters of all skill levels make up the chapter.

Barbershop

Pride of the Ozarks Barbershop Chorus meets from 7 to 9 p.m. every Thursday at Innisfree Senior Living Community, 300 Innisfree Circle in Rogers. Males of any age, color or creed who enjoy a capella singing are welcome and invited. Vocal music experience is helpful.

Altrusa

Altrusa International of Fayetteville recently honored several outstanding members who have served thousands of community service hours through the organization. The group meets at 11:30 a.m. the second Thursday and 6:30 p.m. the fourth Thursday of each month at Mermaids in Fayetteville.
