Conway girls avoid letdown

CONWAY -- Conway Coach Ashley Nance was concerned with her team having a letdown Friday night against Cabot.

Nance didn't have to worry for long as the Lady Wampus Cats rolled to a 65-49 victory at Buzz Bolding Arena, three days after their victory over the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's No. 1 team in the state North Little Rock.

"We're not real deep. We only play seven," Nance said. "But coming into this one, you got Cabot with one of the best coaches [Carla Crowder] to ever coach the game of basketball.

"This one concerned me. But our bench stepped up."

Junior guard Reagan Roetzel led the Lady Wampus Cats (16-1, 3-0 7A-Central Conference) with 15 points on five three-pointers. Senior forward Cardina Nolen had 13 points while sophomore guard Jadah Pickens added 10.

"What makes us so good is that nobody cares about scoring 30 as long as they win," Nance said. "I think that's why we're 16-1 is because we have the ability to spread it out."

Conway led 20-12 with less than six minutes remaining in the second quarter. But Cabot went on an 11-0 run to take a 21-20 lead, with sophomore Emily Belin's basket giving the Lady Panthers their first lead of the game.

The Lady Wampus Cats ended the half on a 12-0 run to take a 32-23 lead at halftime. Roetzel's three-pointer tied the game at 23-23, then Nolen's basket gave her team the lead at 25-23.

Conway stretched its lead to 46-29 midway through the third quarter and led 53-39 entering the fourth quarter.

Cabot (9-6, 2-1) was led by sophomore center Hannah Ogilvie, who had 14 points. Senior Leslie Roberts added 10 points for the Lady Panthers.
