Pea Ridge tops Gravette in 4 OTs

Gravette girls bounce back to top Pea Ridge

GRAVETTE -- It took four overtimes. but Pea Ridge is still perfect in district play.

The Blackhawks won their seventh straight 3A/4A District 1 game without a loss, overcoming a 13-point deficit to edge Gravette 74-71 in quadruple overtime Saturday night.

Pea Ridge (13-3, 7-0) trailed by 13 in the fourth quarter, but rallied to send the game into the first overtime, clinching the comeback after Hayden Holtgrewe scored a layup off a pass from Nick Coble.

"Anytime you can come into Gravette, that's a big win for your program," Pea Ridge coach Trent Loyd said. "Our guys believe they're supposed to win every game and that's what we did."

In the second and third quarters, Gravette (11-4, 5-3) outscored Pea Ridge 31-10. The momentum was all Gravette's way heading into the fourth quarter with forward Dayten Wishon scoring 15 points alone during that span to lead the offense. He finished the night with 41 points, knocking down big shots in the second and third overtime.

Pea Ridge nailed four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, shooting 70 percent from the field. On defense, the Blackhawks clamped down and the Lions went 2-of-7 from the field.

Loyd credited his team's pressure as the game-changer, he said.

"The turning point was when we jumped into our press and we were able to get some momentum with a couple of turnovers and a couple of threes," Loyd, who won his 100th career game last week, said. "Nick Coble hit a three, Hayden Holtgrewe got a couple of steals for us, and all of a sudden, you could see our bench getting into it. You could see our players have a little more fire under them.

"We just had to pick up the pace a little bit and get our guys going. We finally got some easy baskets to get going and hit some perimeter shots that we hadn't hit at the beginning of the game. It was a total team effort especially in that fourth quarter."

Gravette had a chance to tie the game up again late in the fourth overtime after Pea Ridge's Holtgrewe was charged with an intentional foul that sent Wishon to the line for two free throws, plus possession back to Gravette with 3.7 seconds left on the clock.

Wishon could not convert on either attempt, and Gravette missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer that would have sent the game into a fifth overtime.

Free-throw shooting played a big role in all four overtimes. Gravette struggled to find consistency from the line, going 11-of-18, but Pea Ridge made the most of its opportunities from the line, finishing the four overtimes going 18-of-22.

The Blackhawks had four players in double figures with their center, Mikey Mahoney, leading the way with 22. Holtgrewe finished with 18, and was huge on defense especially on the press. Coble scored 17 and Kobe Rose added 15.

One night after being losing in an upset game against Gentry, the Lady Lions (12-5, 7-1) responded by knocking off Pea Ridge.

"Last night came down to we didn't shoot it well," Gravette coach Will Pittman said of the Friday loss. "We shot 23 percent from the field against Gentry; that's hard to win a game. We talked about shooting a little better, picking our intensity up and get back to doing what we do -- just play hard and put a lot of pressure on people."

The Lady Lions rode the back of sophomore forward Cally Kildow, who finished the night with 21 points with 16 of those coming in the second half, and their team's full-court pressure they stayed in the whole night.

Gravette used a big third quarter to push past the Blackhawks. Kildow and Kyrstin Branscum combined for all 16 of the Lions' points in the third, mostly coming off of steals.

Sunny Olson led the Blackhawks (5-11, 1-5) with 11 points, followed closely by Katelyn Swope with 10. Pea Ridge stayed with Gravette for most of the first half, only being down by seven after two quarters, but struggled to keep up with the Lions' physicality in the backcourt.
