Basketball: Greenbrier shakes off rust to defeat Farmington

Lady Cardinals roll to blowout win

FARMINGTON -- Greenbrier waited until the second half to shake off the rust from a 17-day layoff.

The Panthers broke open a close game later in the third quarter and defeated Farmington 59-48 Friday at Cardinal Arena.

Greenbrier outscored Farmington 18-11 in the third quarter after trailing 27-25 at halftime.

The Panthers continued to pull away and led 49-41 early in the fourth quarter following a dunk and two free throws by A.J. Matthews. Devin Clark scored 15 points to lead Greenbrier (11-6), which had been off since playing at Beebe on Dec. 19.

"I was really worried, we've been off 17 days and it's really hard to play up here," Greenbrier coach Mike Simmons said. "I'm really glad we came out of here with the win."

Kobe Dunlap added 12 for Greenbrier while Jacob Gray had 14 for Farmington before he fouled out with midway through the fourth quarter. Xavier Staten scored 10 points before he fouled with the Cardinals trailing 51-44.

The game was mostly even until Greenbrier surged ahead late in the third quarter. Mason Matthews and Dunlap each made driving layups before Clark followed with a 3-pointer in front of the Greenbrier bench.

Farmington (6-8) couldn't recover and Greenbrier left with its fifth win in its last six games.

Farmington took a 27-25 lead at halftime following a basket and two free throws by Jacob Gray. The Cardinals were able to regain the momentum after steals in the backcourt led to three consecutive baskets by Greenbrier, which pulled ahead 25-20.
