Womack on panel for budget reform

House Speaker Paul Ryan has named U.S. Rep. Steve Womack, a Republican from Rogers, to serve on the Joint Select Committee on Budget and Appropriations Process Reform.

The 16-member body will look for ways to improve the congressional budgeting process.

Womack, who recently became chairman of the House Budget Committee, says changes are overdue.

"Without question, the federal budgeting process is broken," he said in a written statement. "As conversations begin in the days ahead, I am optimistic about the potential for significant reforms that make our government function better for the American people."

Ryan, R-Wis., called Womack "a proven leader."

The Trump administration recently unveiled a budget blueprint that foresees $7 trillion in deficit spending over the next decade.

Womack said the Trump budget targets "waste, fraud and abuse" and "takes significant steps towards reducing the deficit" but that tough choices lie ahead.
