NRA stance may foment gun confiscation efforts

Let me say, first, that I grew up in a home with quite a few guns, all for hunting purposes. There were no assault rifles, machine guns, pistols, bazookas, or other weapons good only for killing people. Therefore, I wouldn’t begin to tell people who use guns for hunting and shooting sports that they have no right to those activities. The Second Amendment to our Constitution gives them that right and I can think of no good reason to deprive them of it.

But here we are: another mass shooting, complete with crocodile tears from the NRA and the politicians on its payroll. Their solution, as usual, is more guns. The fact is we will not be safer if law-abiding citizens shoot it out on the streets with the “bad guys”; nor will our schools be safer if we turn them into armed, fortified camps. And what about all those other soft targets? We can’t fortify them all.

The NRA, over the past several decades, has shifted from an organization that promoted gun safety and hunting and shooting sports to one that is just a shill for the gun industry.

What every gun-owner should understand is that if they want to hasten the day when government agents come to their homes to confiscate their guns, they should continue to support the NRA’s do-nothing position. At some point our society will decide that something HAS to be done and it won’t be beneficial to gun ownership.
