The Arkansas State Independent Living Council honored eight Arkansans on Jan. 26 at a luncheon at the Governor's Mansion.
The council's "Circle of Service" event honors individuals and businesses that have affected the lives of disabled Arkansans.
Gov. Asa Hutchinson was the keynote speaker, urging attendees to hire the disabled. He pointed out that one of his greatest feelings is taking pride in being able to work.
"No one should be denied that feeling," he said.
Among the honorees were Lori and Willie Johnson of Russellville, who have adopted 28 children with disabilities. Fifteen of their children were in attendance and were all given medallions during the event.
The other honorees were former state Sen. Tracy Steele of North Little Rock; Pine Bluff Police Chief Ivan Whitfield; Doug and Myra Watson, founders of Communications + Interpreter Services Inc., Justin Gauze and Derek Mack.
North Little Rock Police Officer Tommy Norman was master of ceremonies.
