Couple, minor son arrested after boy takes stolen gun to Arkansas school

A Van Buren couple and their minor son were arrested this week after police said the boy's parents knew he had a stolen gun and had taken it to school.

Ruben Granados, 32, and Melissa Granados, 29, were arrested on charges of felony theft by receiving and tampering with physical evidence after their son, a student at Central Elementary School, took the handgun to school Tuesday and showed it to other students, according to a news release Friday from the Van Buren Police Department.

Ruben and Melissa Granados have been released from the Crawford County jail after each posted a $3,500 bond, according to jail records.

The release said the boy was charged with possession of a handgun on school property and theft by receiving, both felonies, the release said.

None of the students told school officials the boy had the gun at school, but one of the students told his parents that evening and they reported it to school officials. A police school resource officer verified that the student had brought the gun to school, the release said.

Officers then found out the boy's parents knew he had a gun and had taken it to school.

"The parents even concocted a story to cover up the offense; however, they later changed their story and even led investigators to the gun, which had been hidden in their backyard," the release said.

Investigators were trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the theft of the handgun, the release said.
