Nigel Spears of Fort Smith, a student at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has been selected to attend the Southern States Communication Association’s 28th annual Theodore Clevenger undergraduate honors conference April 4-8 in Nashville, Tenn. Undergraduate students will have the opportunity to present and discuss their research with faculty and fellow students, as well as explore graduate study opportunities.
Applicants were chosen based on papers with relevance to the field of communication, writing and organization,; research thoroughness; inclusion and support of research methods; and final results or recommendations. Spears’ topic was “African American Men vs. Society: How We Feel About Protesting.”

STOCK MARKET GAME
Arkansas students were honored for winning first and second places during the fall 2017 Stock Market Game. These successful junior investors received medals, cash and public recognition during an awards luncheon Jan. 10, hosted by Economics Arkansas at Verizon Arena in North Little Rock.
The Stock Market Game, an investment simulation competition for students in grades 4-12 challenges participants to grow a hypothetical stock portfolio of $100,000 over the course of 12 weeks. Not only do students learn key saving and investing principles, but also hone their math, business, communication, economics and analytical skills.

Junior high — Region 1: Ozark Junior High School, first place and second places. Region 2: Waldron Middle School, first and second places.

Grant Shaw, a page at Fayetteville Public Library, recently earned his master of library and information sciences degree from the University of North Texas in Denton. As part of his current page duties, Shaw reshelves library materials, processes patron requests and keeps the library neat and orderly. Shaw began volunteering at the library in early 2016. He received his bachelor of arts degree in psychology in 2003 from the University of Arkansas.

YOUTH PROGRAM
Pablo Mateos of Spring-dale will represent Arkansas in the U.S. Senate Youth Program on March 3-10 in Washington, D.C. He also receives a $10,000 college scholarship for undergraduate study from the Hearst Foundation.
The program is designed “to increase young Americans’ understanding of the interrelationships of the three branches of government, learn the caliber and responsibilities of federally elected and appointed officials, and emphasize the vital importance of democratic decision making not only for America but for people around the world.”
While in Washington the student delegates attend meetings and briefings with senators, members of the House of Representatives, Congressional staff, the president, a justice of the Supreme Court, leaders of cabinet agencies, an ambassador to the United States and senior members of the national media. The students will also tour many of the national monuments and several museums and they will stay at the historic Mayflower Hotel in downtown Washington, D.C.
In addition to outstanding leadership abilities and a strong commitment to volunteer work, the student delegates rank academically in the top one percent of their states among high school juniors and seniors.
Mateos attends Har-Ber High School where he serves as the senior class president. He was elected senator at Boys State, is a National Merit semifinalist, National Honor Society vice president, Legacy Bank Junior Bank Board president and captain of Mock Trial and the swim team. Manon is also a member of student council, Future Business Leaders of America, and the speech and debate team. He has attended the Summer @ Brown Behavioral Economics Program and is a volunteer at his Catholic church, senior citizens center, Veterans Administration, assisted living facilities and Arkasalsa — an inclusivity festival for the community.

The Mahoney Family Foundation, a newly formed organization dedicated to assisting nurses and teachers in their pursuit of advanced degrees, has awarded its first eight scholarships for spring semester courses.
