3 people seek Maumelle mayor's seat

Three candidates in Maumelle will compete in the Nov. 6 general election to replace Mayor Mike Watson, and three hopefuls also filed for an open Ward 2 position on the Maumelle City Council.

Filing for elected municipal positions ended at noon Friday. All terms are for four years, starting Jan. 1.

Roger Harrod, 73, a former three-term district judge in Maumelle; Caleb Norris, 38, Maumelle's city attorney and a former city council member; and Leticia Sanders, 42, a self-employed hair braider who lost in the May Democratic primary for governor, will compete for the mayoral position.

Watson announced July 2 that he wouldn't run for a fourth term as mayor. The mayor's current annual salary is $81,600.

Melissa "Missy" Krebs, 45, will become the new Maumelle city attorney, replacing Norris. Krebs, the only candidate to file for the position, works as special counsel, privacy officer, for Stephens, Inc. The Maumelle city attorney position pays $85,000 annually.

Chad Gardner, 41; R.J. Mazzoni, 50; and James Moreno, 69, will vie for the open Ward 2 City Council position. Ward 2 council member Rick Anderson isn't seeking re-election.

Gardner owns an insurance company specializing in managing employers' workplace benefits. Mazzoni, a former C-130 pilot in the Air Force, is a C-130J instructor pilot for Cymstar LLC that offers training and simulation for commercial and military flights. Moreno is a retired contract geologist.

Two members of the City Council drew opposition to their re-election.

Ward 3 council member G.K. Timmons, 67, chief executive officer for an event management company, will face opponent Michael Tierney, 63, owner of comic book stores in Little Rock and North Little Rock.

Council member Jessie Holt, 81, of Ward 4, a real estate agent in Maumelle, drew opposition from Ray Schwankhart, who turns 51 today, a senior reliability coordinator for the Southwest Power Pool.

Ward 1 council member Kenneth Saunders, 66, owner of a real estate appraisal company, and City Clerk-Treasurer Tina Timmons, 43, are both unopposed in the election.

Members of the Maumelle City Council are paid $6,000 yearly. The city clerk's salary is $57,120.
