Hit-and-run in Fort Smith injures man

FORT SMITH -- A 62-year-old man was struck and seriously injured Friday morning by a motorist who fled, Fort Smith police said.

Fort Smith police have not identified the man who was hit shortly after 8 a.m. by what witnesses said was a Ford F-250 as he walked in the 1400 block of Fresno Street.

The man was taken to a local hospital before being transported later to a Little Rock hospital.

Police later identified Jason Clinton Gothard, 41, as the driver of the pickup. Police said they found the pickup abandoned near the 1900 block of Fresno Street.

Gothard was arrested about 12:40 p.m. after being located in the 2200 block of South J Street.

Troop 1 Commander Lt. Dewey Young chased him down and arrested him, police said.

Gothard faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, fleeing on foot and parole violation.
