A kickoff celebration commemorating women receiving the right to vote was held July 28 at the Old State House Museum. The festivities were hosted by The Women's Suffrage Centennial Commemoration Committee.
The event -- the first in a yearlong commemoration -- included a photo booth with costumes, button making, pennants and sashes promoting women's suffrage, and meeting Arkansas suffragists portrayed by living history characters. There was also voting on a favorite ice cream flavor with ice cream provided by Loblolly Creamery.
Arkansas was the 12th state to ratify the 19th Amendment to the Constitution on July 28, 1919. The amendment became law on Aug. 26, 1920.
Members of the committee, during a news conference, unveiled its logo and spoke about a new website which will serve as a repository for information and history on women's suffrage in Arkansas and will include information on forthcoming events.
