Tsitsipas reaches final

Greek teen Stefanos Tsitsipas became the youngest player to beat four consecutive top-10 players in an event since the ATP World Tour was established in 1990, outlasting Kevin Anderson 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (7) on Saturday to reach the final of the Rogers Cup in Toronto. Tsitsipas, who will be 20 today, will face the winner of the late match between top-ranked Rafael Nadal and Karen Khachanov. Tsitsipas beat the fourth-seeded Anderson, 32, after topping seventh-seeded Dominic Thiem, ninth-seeded Novak Djokovic and second-seeded defending champion Alexander Zverev to reach his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semifinal. Tsitsipas fired an ace at 7-7 before converting his third match point of the deciding tiebreaker when Anderson's return sailed long. The South African had a match point of his own at 7-6, but Tsitsipas came through with a brilliant backhand crosscourt winner to pull even.

Weary Halep advances

A weary Simona Halep, upset over how her matches are scheduled, beat Ashleigh Barty 6-4, 6-1 on Saturday to reach the final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal. The top-ranked Romanian will play for the title today against the third-ranked Sloane Stephens in a rematch of Halep's victory in the French Open final. Stephens, preparing for her U.S. Open title defense, beat fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-3. Halep complained Friday about playing the first semifinal day after two consecutive night matches. She contended she has the worst schedule in the 56-player event. Despite playing on only 15 hours rest, Halep was in control from the outset against the 15th-seeded Barty, eliminating the Australian in 71 minutes.

Pierre-Louis suspended

New York Jets linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis has been suspended by the NFL for the first game of the regular season without pay for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Pierre-Louis was arrested and charged in January with several misdemeanors, including possession of marijuana, after a traffic stop in suburban Kansas City. In March, he reached a plea deal in which the marijuana possession charge would be dropped if he completes a one-year probation. Pierre-Louis, 26, signed by the Jets during the offseason, can return to the active roster on Sept. 11.

Fowler off PUP list

The Jacksonville Jaguars have removed defensive end Dante Fowler from the physically unable to perform list. Fowler missed the first two weeks of training camp while recovering from a shoulder injury sustained late last season. It's a big year for Fowler, the third overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft. The former Florida standout is entering the final year of his rookie contract. He has 12 sacks in the last two seasons, plus two more in the AFC championship game at New England.

Titans add, drop backs

The Titans have added two defensive backs and dropped two others after their preseason opener. Tennessee announced Saturday they agreed to terms with Kenneth Durden and Trey Caldwell and waived cornerbacks Joseph Este and Jarell Carter. Durden spent last season on Oakland's practice squad after going undrafted out of Youngstown State. Caldwell was drafted out of Louisiana-Monroe in 2016 in the fifth round by Cleveland, where he was on the practice squad before being signed in December and playing one game. Este helped on one tackle in the Titans' 31-17 loss to Green Bay.

Sorensen has bad leg

The Kansas City Chiefs will be without starting safety Daniel Sorensen for the start of the season after surgery to repair a broken shin bone and damage to his left knee. Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder described the injury Saturday as a tibial plateau fracture, which involves the upper part of the shin. Sorensen also damaged his medial collateral ligament and tore his meniscus when he was hurt during a special teams drill last week. "One of the guys fell on his leg," Chiefs Coach Andy Reid said. The injury is similar to the one sustained by J.J. Watt last year, causing the Texans defensive end to miss the rest of the season. That may be Sorensen's fate, too, but Burkholder said the Chiefs plan to wait six weeks before evaluating him again.

Michigan probes sales

The University of Michigan's athletics compliance office is investigating whether any student-athletes violated NCAA rules with regard to shoe resales. North Carolina suspended 13 football players earlier this week after the school found that they committed secondary violations by selling team-issued Nike shoes. Per reports, a retailer who obtained the shoes said it also bought team-issued shoes from Michigan, Cal and Marquette. Michigan athletics spokesman Dave Ablauf said in a statement Friday night that the school is aware of the situation and is investigating the matter. ESPN reported Friday that shoe-marketplace site "StockX" found 23 pairs of Michigan team-issued shoes on its exchange. This doesn't necessarily mean those shoes were sold by players, Ablauf said, as Michigan gives team-issued shoes to executives, celebrities and to charity. Former players who are no longer with the program may also still be in possession of team-issued shoes. Staffers are also issued team shoes. Ablauf told ESPN that players are required to sign forms that outline shoe resales as an NCAA violation. He said the team's equipment staff marks the team-issued shoes with a player's name or uniform number.

Wade ponders return

If Dwyane Wade plays this season, it will be in a Miami Heat uniform. It's still a significant "if." Wade, speaking Saturday night during an appearance at the Jr. NBA World Championship, told reporters that he doesn't have a timetable for when he'll make a decision on whether to return to the Heat this season. He did make clear, however, that the Heat are the only team he's considering. Wade and Udonis Haslem, both of whom would be entering their 16th seasons if they continue, remain unsigned with about six weeks left before the start of training camp. Haslem has spent his entire NBA career with the Heat. Wade said there is "no clock" on his decision. The Heat have indicated repeatedly they would like both Wade and Haslem back.
