Airport parking deck opens

The 20-year-old terminal building at the Northwest Arkansas Regioinal Airport will be getting a makeover in the next couple of years. Board members on Wednesday had in an informal input session with engineers and architects to give them a general idea of what they'd like the terminal to look like after the planned renovation and expansion. The work should result in a new front door for the terminal including a new building across the loop drive from the main terminal and a second-floor bridge into what is now the front of the terminal.

The new $35 million parking deck at the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport will be open to customers today, according to a news release.

The airport's board hired Nabholz Construction in December 2016 to construct the four-level, 1,400-space, covered parking deck. The airport staff issued more than $25 million in revenue bonds in a deal with Regions Capital Advantage for the project.

"This state of the art facility also has a fantastic wayfinding system that shares with the driver how many spaces are available on each level and a lighting system that will indicate which space on which row is actually available," the news release states.

The Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport Board approved the $494,378 electronic guidance system in February for the top three floors of the deck as the bottom floor will initially house rental car operations. Another parking garage is expected to be built in the next few years to provide rental companies a permanent home. The guidance system can then be added to the first floor.

The parking deck also has electric car charging stations, according to the news release.

A ribbon cutting is set for 1 p.m. Aug. 15.
