BENTONVILLE -- Aubrey Patterson is seeking her first full term on the City Council after being elected to fill a vacancy earlier this year.

Patterson, 38, grew up in Russellville and has lived in Bentonville for 16 years.

Voters chose her in March to fill a vacancy left by Tom Hoehn. She defeated Michelle Malashock.

Patterson filed for Position 1 in Ward 3, which is the seat she holds. She had not drawn an opponent as of Tuesday afternoon. Filing closes at noon Aug. 17.

"I am seeking re-election because I want to be a voice for residents on the council, and I want to help ensure that Bentonville's growth and development continues in a responsible manner," she said.

Patterson earned a bachelor's degree in political science from University of Central Arkansas and is pursuing a master's degree in teaching from UCA. She volunteers at the Salvation Army Emergency Shelter.

Patterson said she wants to see the council adopt the Bentonville Community Plan -- a citywide comprehensive plan that will guide growth for the next 15 to 20 years -- approve plans for an animal shelter, oversee the renovation and expansion of the Melvin Ford Aquatic Center, add parks in the southwest part of the city, expand infrastructure and continue to support the police and fire departments.

The city adopted new ward boundaries that will take effect Jan. 1. Candidates must live in the ward for which they're seeking election based on the new boundaries.

Ward 3 will encompass all of the city south of Southwest 14th Street and west of Southwest I Street.

City Council members are paid $711 a month. The nonpartisan election will be held Nov. 6.
