An officer-involved shooting Friday left a suspect dead and a police chief hurt in northeast Arkansas, authorities said.

Trumann Police Chief Chad Henson was contacted around 10 a.m. Friday by 49-year-old Johnny Kelley, who lives near Trumann, according to an Arkansas State Police news release.

Henson told state police that after he arrived at Kelley's residence, Kelley shot at him, according to the release. Henson shot back, killing the 49-year-old, the release states.

Arkansas State police spokeswoman Liz Chapman said Henson’s injuries were not life-threatening and that the shooting happened on Kessing Lane near Trumann. Poinsett County Coroner Butch Davis said the injured officer was transported for medical care.

Arkansas State Police are investigating the shooting, authorities said. Kelley’s body will be taken to the state Crime Lab.

The results of the state police investigation will be given to the prosecuting attorney to determine if the use of deadly force was warranted.

An official with the Poinsett County sheriff’s office said that a statement would be issued later. An employee at the Trumann Police Department declined to answer questions and referred an Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reporter to state police.

It is the second fatal officer-involved shooting in northeast Arkansas this week.

A Missouri man who killed an Arkansas State Police dog died hours after being shot by officers in a gunfight Monday night, authorities previously said.

James Edward Blackmon, 35, of St. Louis was stopped by state troopers shortly before 7 p.m. Monday on Interstate 55 in Mississippi County after his vehicle was identified as one that was sought by Missouri authorities, according to a news release from the agency.
