Great Flood lecture

Richard Spilman, education coordinator for the Delta Cultural Center, will discuss the impact the 1927 Mississippi River flood had on the lives of people in the Arkansas Delta in a talk titled "The Great Flood of 1927," noon-1 p.m. today at the center's Miller Annex, 223 Cherry St., Helena-West Helena. Chamber concert

Pianist Andrius Zlabys and cellist Jeremy Crosmer will play the Cello Sonata by Claude Debussy to open the second of two Faulkner Chamber Music Festival summer faculty concerts, titled "Motives," 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall, Fine Arts Building, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, 2801 S. University Ave., Little Rock.

The program will also include Aaron Jay Kernis' On Distant Shores with Crosmer on solo cello: Andreas Oeste, solo oboe; Geoffrey Robson and Katherine Williamson, violin; Ryan Mooney, viola; Philip Boulanger, cello; and Zlabys; and the String Sextet No. 2 in G major, op.36, by Johannes Brahms, with Yaira Matyakubova and Robson, violin; Mooney and Williamson, viola; and Boulanger and Crosmer, cello.

The Chamber Music Society of Little Rock is organizing the festival with support from the Arkansas Arts Council and the Acansa Arts Festival. Tickets are $15, free for students and festival members. 'Fourteener' exhibit

Justus Fine Art Gallery, 827A Central Ave., Hot Springs, marks its 14th year of business with the "Fourteener" exhibit, including shaped paintings by Dustyn Bork, Taimur Cleary, a painting by Matthew Hasty, wood sculptures by Robyn Horn and Sandra Sell, abstracted landscapes by Dolores Justus, a wood table by Jill Kyong, pastels by Charles Peer, woodturnings by Gene Sparling and abstract paintings by Dan Thornhill. It opens with a reception, 5-9 p.m. Friday, in conjunction with the monthly downtown Hot Springs Gallery Walk. Author Chap Harper will sign copies of his latest book, Shortcut.

Aug. 17 at 5 p.m. is the deadline to submit to Preserve Arkansas nominations for the 2018 Arkansas Preservation Awards, honoring outstanding preservation achievements, people who make a difference in their communities and projects that inspire others to protect Arkansas' special historic places, in these categories:
