Samaritan's Purse, a Christian international relief organization, sponsored the event, which challenged nine teams from eight universities to design and construct a rapidly deployable emergency shelter. Each shelter underwent durability testing for earthquake sustainability, heat retention, overnight habitability, wind turbulence and water resistance.

A panel of nine judges with expertise in emergency management, engineering, and logistics and manufacturing scored each shelter's performance and team's presentation detailing schematics.
