Officials approve raises for county workers

VAN BUREN -- Elected officials and county employees in Crawford County are in line for pay raises, with the Quorum Court's approval of an ordinance Monday night.

Elected officials will receive $4,000 raises. Raises for full-time employees will be $2,000 and for part-time employees $1,000, according to the ordinance. County Judge Dennis Gilstrap said the raises will go into effect during the first full pay period after the approval.

Crawford County treasurer Beverly Pyle said the county has about $425,000 "that was rolled back into county coffers" and about $100,000 from an increase in tax collections and fees.

Gilstrap said previously that the ordinance was taken before the Quorum Court because county employees hadn't received raises "for years." He said he hoped the raises are the first of a number of raises that officials and employees will receive to get their pay more in line with counterparts in other counties in the state.

Officials hope the raises will help retain employees who otherwise move on to better-paying jobs, often after the county goes to the trouble of training them, Gilstrap said.
