• Arkansas has the highest death rate in the nation for stroke. Physicians at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences want to curb that trend. Dr. Robert W. Barnes, chairman of the department of surgery at UAMS, said the state's death rate for stroke is more than 50 percent greater than the national average of 56.8 deaths per 100,000 population. In Arkansas, the rate is 89.4 per 100,000, said Barnes, who is also professor of surgery at UAMS. Physicians at UAMS are trying to prevent stroke deaths by teaching the warning signs of the disease.

• A Little Rock man accused of robbing and killing a Mabelvale woman last year told authorities that his fascination with the number 28 prompted him to stalk her to her father's Little Rock home, a mental health report presented to a Pulaski County circuit judge Friday shows. Francis Ann Kelly, 50, was found in the garage of her father's Stardust Trail home on Nov. 1. Her hands were tied behind her back, and she had been shot several times. Antonio Finney was arrested three days after Kelly's body was found when he went to the Police Department to answer detectives' questions. The mental-evaluation report shows that police believe Finney singled out Kelly after seeing that the license plate on her Cadillac included the number 28. Finney, 31, has that number tattooed on his chest, and he told police that he was from the 28th Street area and that "the number 28 is very symbolic and significant in my life."
