Bentonville and Rogers principals named masters

Two of the three people named master principals this year in Arkansas are from Benton County schools.

Sharla Osbourn, principal of Darr Elementary School in Rogers, and Ashley Williams, principal of Jones Elementary School in Bentonville, completed three years of professional development plus an additional year of performance evaluations to achieve master status.

Lisa Miller, principal at Van Buren Freshman Academy in the Van Buren School District, also was named a master principal this spring.

The master principal program, authorized by the Legislature in 2003, is run by the Arkansas Leadership Academy, based in the College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas.

Osbourn has been principal of Darr Elementary School since it opened in 2013. She previously was principal of Lowell Elementary School. She has a bachelor's degree from College of the Ozarks and a master's degree from the University of Arkansas.

Williams has been principal at Jones Elementary School since 2011 and was assistant principal there. She received a bachelor's degree from the University of Arkansas and a master's degree from Harding University in Searcy.

Master principals receive a $9,000-per-year bonus for five years upon earning the designation. They are eligible for an additional $25,000 per year for five years if they are selected to serve at a low-performing school, according to an Arkansas Department of Education news release.
