Pallasmaa

to speak

Juhani Pallasmaa will present a lecture at 4:30 p.m. Monday in Ken and Linda Sue Shollmier Hall, Room 250 of Vol Walker Hall on the University of Arkansas campus, as part of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design Lecture series.

Pallasmaa has authored more than 50 books relating to the multisensory and existential dimensions of experiencing art and architecture. He is former rector of the Institute of Design in Helsinki, Finland, dean of the faculty of architecture at the Helsinki University of Technology, and director of the Museum of Finnish Architecture, Helsinki.

He is this semester's E. Fay Jones Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Fay Jones School. This is also the Warren Segraves Lecture, sponsored by Modus Studio.

The public is invited to attend. Admission is free, with limited seating.

Tuesday topic

A kayak will be given away at the inaugural Ozark Environmental Conversation which will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Arvest Conference Room, North Main Street and Legion Lane in Bentonville. The event was organized by The Friends of Little Sugar Creek and The Ozark Society Sugar Creek Chapter. Serena McClain, director of River Restoration for American Rivers, will speak on "The Benefits of Dam Removal and Stream Restoration." Other panelists include Dr. Melissa Lombardi, endangered species biologist with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service; and Darrell Bowman, director of the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission.

Health Fair

The Senior Health Clinic at Washington Regional is hosting a Senior Health Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Pat Walker Senior Center, 12 E. Appleby Road in Fayetteville. Supported by the Senior Health Clinic Patient and Family Advisory Committee, the fair will offer health screenings, "The Alzheimer's Experience," informational booths, refreshments and socializing.

cleanup set

The annual cleanup and business meeting for the Burkshed Cemetery will begin around 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the cemetery, located at 23085 Fate Anderson Road in Hindsville. The business meeting will be held at 10:30 a.m.

seeks donors

The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks strives for area blood reserves to be at around a three-day supply for all blood types. O negative blood supplies are currently at less than a one-day reserve level. This is a critical shortage, and O negative blood donors are strongly urged to give as soon as possible at a CBCO drive or donor center near you.

Trafficking

Rotary Clubs from Springdale and Fayetteville are hosting "A Day of Awareness to End Human Trafficking," sponsored by The Jones Center. The event will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday at The Jones Center, 922 E. Emma Ave. in Springdale.

Speakers include Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge, United States Attorney for the Western District of Arkansas Duane A. Kees, University of Arkansas associate professor of law Annie B. Smith, Robert Allen of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, John Ahrends of the Department of Homeland Security, Carolyn Bates of Magdalene Serenity House, Youth Bridge clinical director Dr. Michael Flowers; Into the Light director Gretchen Smeltzer, and first responder and volunteer Jason Edwards, and founder and executive director of Parents Against Child Trafficking Barbara Gregory.

Kathy Bryan, director of Elevate Academy, author, consultant, advocate and human trafficking survivor, will be the noon keynote speaker.

There is a $20 fee which includes lunch. Registrants may attend any portion or all of the day. Two hours of continuing education credit is available for counselors, and six hours of continuing legal education and CLEST credit has been requested.
