Komen gives grants

Life Styles Inc. and guests were "Breaking Barriers" at the nonprofit organization's 30th annual Celebration of Possibilities Luncheon March 14 at the Fayetteville Town Center.

Nancy Wells, with her daughter Mary "Molly" Ivy, provided keynote remarks and spoke of being a "Life Styles family" and the enormous support they receive from the group's staff and other clients.

With guidance and support from Life Styles, Molly is able to live in her own apartment and be employed. Nancy said, "Molly's team respects Molly and her decisions. Being in her own apartment expanded Molly's perception of what she can become. Thank you so much for the future of Molly Ivy."

The luncheon is an opportunity for the nonprofit organization to celebrate clients, staff members, volunteers, client employers and community partners.

This year's Community Partnership awards went to:

Physician's Specialty Hospital -- Employer of the Year;

Arvest Bank Fayetteville -- Volunteer Group of the Year; and

Greg Reeves -- Volunteer of the Year.

Next up for Life Styles is the 29th annual Polo in the Ozarks on Sept. 8 at the Buell Farm in Goshen.

Those celebrating with Life Styles included Claire and Bo Bittle, Nancy and Larry Bittle, Sue and David Van Bebber, Hannah and Greg Lee, Karen and Warren McDonald, Terrye Brosh, Woody Bassett, Carol and Bill Hart and Donna Buell.

The Susan G. Komen Ozark Affiliate announced $550,000 in grants to breast cancer education and support programs at the Promise Circle Luncheon on March 28 at Mermaids Seafood Restaurant in Fayetteville.

Grants were awarded to:

Community Clinic, $89,500.

Cox Foundation, $40,000.

Donald W. Reynolds Cancer Support Center, $37,000.

Madison County Health Coalition, $61,500.

Mercy Breast Bentonville, $35,000.

Mercy Fort Smith, $40,000.

North Arkansas Partnership for Health Education, $115,000.

Washington Regional Cancer Support Home, $132,000.

Since its founding in 1998, the 20-year-old affiliate has awarded $11 million to local breast health services programs and invested $3.75 million for research to find a cure.

The luncheon was also a chance for Komen leaders to laud the top volunteer fundraisers from the 2017 Race for the Cure. Among those with top numbers were Tiffany Lowe, Tiffany Blankenship, Mike Turner, Latriece Watkins, Vivyan and John Garrard, Melinda Murphy, Maureen Gulick, Cheryl Nichols, Jaclyn Moreda, Alicia Ledbetter, Ginger Brooks, Karen Dineen and Samathia Tedder.

The 2018 Race for the Cure, the group's largest fundraising event, is set for April 28 at Pinnacle Hills Promenade Mall in Rogers.
