ASU warns of plot to redirect deposits

Arkansas State University is asking its students to review their online accounts and change their passwords after a likely phishing scheme, the school said Tuesday.

The university's treasurer's office and information-technology department were investigating and found that five students experienced attempts to redirect deposits into accounts that were not their own, it said. Of the five, three students have lost funds while attempts to change two other students' depositing accounts failed, the university said.

"Everything appears consistent with an email-based phishing scheme that enticed the students to give out their A-State login and password," Chief Information Officer Henry Torres said in a prepared statement. "We are asking everyone to check as a precaution and to see if we have any other students who fell victim to the scheme. Even if you do not have direct deposit set up, check to make sure there isn't a fraudulent account attached."

Students should check the A-State Payment System, or myBill, link through MyCampus to verify their bank accounts are tied to the online accounts. Students can find more detailed instructions on how to verify the accounts inside the MyCampus landing page, the university said.

Under Arkansas State policy, the school will never ask a student for log-in information via email. Students with concerns or questions can contact the university treasurer's office by email at [email protected] or by phone at (870) 972-2285.
