SPRINGDALE -- A power outage that left thousands in the dark for about 90 minutes Thursday occurred as equipment was being put into a substation.

A piece of equipment that had been repaired was being installed, Peter Main, spokesman for Southwestern Electric Power Company, said Friday. Protective equipment inside the substation detected a problem.

"The protective equipment operated as it should," Main said. "That interrupted service to customers served out of that station."

About 3,900 customers across central Springdale lost power at 2 p.m. Power was restored by 3:30 p.m., but the new equipment wasn't installed, Main said.

Lt. Jeff Taylor of the Springdale Police Department said Thursday night he didn't hear of any significant problems caused to city services or residents because of the outage.
