Accidents on roads fatal for six people

At least six people died in accidents on state roads since Saturday, according to Arkansas State Police, who also identified a man killed in a Little Rock crash earlier this month.

A crash on Interstate 40 in Lonoke County killed a Kentucky woman early Tuesday.

Just before 3 a.m., a 2017 Ford traveling west on I-40 rear-ended another vehicle, then skidded and caught on fire, according to a preliminary crash report.

The Ford's driver, Taylor Renfrow, 28, was injured and taken to UAMS Medical Center in Little Rock, according to the report. A passenger, Caroline Renfrow, 31, died at the scene of the crash. Both were from Cadiz, Ky.

No one in the second vehicle was injured.

The crash happened near the Remington Arms Co.. Westbound lanes of I-40 were shut down for more than two hours.

Also Tuesday, a 22-year-old Cave City man died after his vehicle hit a tree stump in Sharp County, state police said.

Johnny Taylor was traveling west in a 2009 Chevrolet on West Center Street near Cave City, when he crossed into the lane of eastbound traffic shortly after 2:30 a.m., according to a preliminary crash report.

The vehicle then left the road, went through a barbed-wire fence and struck a tree stump, killing Taylor.

A 57-year-old Jonesboro man was killed Monday morning in a crash after his vehicle overturned into a ditch, state police said.

According to a crash report, Darrell Carter was headed south on U.S. 67 north of Gum Stump Road when he drove off the highway about 5 a.m.

The 2003 Saturn he was driving then overturned into a ditch, killing Carter, authorities said.

On Saturday, a man and a woman were killed when their motorcycle crossed the centerline on an Arkansas highway and was struck by an oncoming vehicle, authorities said.

It happened about 3 p.m. on Arkansas 187 west of Beaver, according to a state police report.

Jeffery James Schneider, 53, of Omaha was riding a 2000 Yamaha west on the highway with 52-year-old Laurie Ann Schneider as a passenger, the report said.

In a curve, the motorcycle crossed into eastbound traffic. Jeffery Schneider overcorrected, causing the motorcycle to lay on its right side, the report said. Its rear tire was then struck by the front bumper of an eastbound Dodge, police said.

Both motorcycle riders suffered fatal injuries. The driver of the Dodge was not hurt.

A 59-year-old Arkansas man died hours after he was struck by a pickup Saturday night in Warren, state police said.

Percy Gavin Jr. was walking west near the fog line of U.S. 278B about 9 p.m. when he was struck by a westbound 2000 Chevy pickup, according to a state police report.

Gavin was taken by helicopter to UAMS Medical Center in Little Rock, where he died from his injuries about 11:30 p.m.

The pickup driver was not hurt.

State police also identified a person who died in a wreck earlier this month in Little Rock as 21-year-old Malik Lewis.

Lewis, of Little Rock, died after the car he was riding collided with another vehicle the night of Sept. 9.

Police said Jerry Jones, 36, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Corvette south on Madison Street about 11:40 p.m. when he tried to turn left onto Asher Avenue and the vehicle collided with a westbound 2016 Dodge Charger.

Lewis, who was a passenger in the Charger, was pronounced dead at the scene, Little Rock Police Department spokesman Lt. Steven McClanahan said.

Jones and the driver of the Charger, 21-year-old Jerry Joyner of Little Rock, were both injured. A passenger in the Corvette, Sirisha Davis, 31, of Jacksonville, Fla., was also hurt.

The report did not detail the extent of the injuries, but police said at the time that two people suffered serious injuries.

The weather was clear and roads were dry at the time of all the accidents, state police reported.
