$25,000 to help fix John Brown dorm

A $25,000 donation to John Brown University will support a $6 million renovation to student housing.

The Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable Trust of Texas is providing the gift. Roy Sturgis, a timber industrialist and oil investor from Arkansas, died in 1976, and his wife, Christine, died in 1981.

Renovation work began this spring at Mayfield Residence Hall, a 247-bed women's dormitory on the Siloam Springs campus.

Rooms will be expanded as part of the renovation, reducing capacity by about 20 beds, said Tarah Thomas, a John Brown spokesman. New bathrooms and a new heating and air system will be installed, among other renovations, with the work to be finished by next summer. The dormitory opened in 1964.
